"Punks Make Art"

It's true, punks do make art. But who was really doubting whether or not punks make art?

I was asked by Ramsey Buyer to contribute a few drawings to a show at the Juicer on January 20th. Although I am not familiar with anyone (bands or artists) on the list, nor do I have the ability to label myself as a punk, DIY Chicago informs that the band Tenement is "from WI, insanely good replacements-ish punk, members of Bored Straight". The show is a benefit to raise support for the DIY Chicago Collective and there will be delicious food. If this at all sounds intriguing, please feel inclined.

The Cat Pack

James Payne and I recently created an installation/sneakily handed b-day gift/Louis Wain inspired/ Cat Pack holiday set. The portraits were painted to scale of their feline counter parts and asked to be displayed kitty height. The Pack also includes accompanying poems by James Payne hisself:

Thurber

A mouser with his owner away like that
is less concerned with appearances than your average house cat

In truth,
it’s not too uncouth,
for a kit-kat to develop a lil’ nip tooth

Spending all day,
cooped up with no play,
understandably leads to indulging like a Mr. Dorian Gray

Oscar Wilde may understand,
but James Thurber is less rabid a fan,*
yet his namesake still gobbles up just as much nip as he can

(Then meows “Stick it to the man, man.”)

* More of a drunkard, really, than a herbal dapper Dan.

All Girl Metal Band

The promoter’s poster for the big show,
that was trying to get all the coolest cats to go
said less about the band’s sound and hometown area
and much, much more about the touring puss’s genitalia

Their description wasn’t the one they had asked:
“Satan-exalting incinerating riffs that are faster than you can possibly understand.”
It was:
“Dude, it’s an all girl metal band!”

But a certain young kit-kat
- a precocious chat at that -
(one like you never knew, she’d stage dive while soloing and slam dance right into you
(all without going the slightest bit out of tune))
held the promoter’s line as a badge of pride:

“Yes, we are an all girl metal band,
and yes, your ears will be fried.”

All the tom cats in the audience
were not sure exactly what to do,
they stared on while saying:

“Man - she rips.
I mean, like, for a girl, dude.”

The prolific Anne Elizabeth Moore and everyone's favorite maverick James Payne are at it again. This dynamic duo is serving up a substantial dose of 'pressing concerns'. These zinesters have concocted a pocket sized supply of lady drawers and the lack there of in comic anthologies and within the panels themselves. I encourage everyone to pester them into making you a copy.

This weekend concludes a monumental celebration of print culture in Chicago. I recently co-organized the Comics Symposium of Chicago with my collaborator Ingrid Olson. All of our contributors were absolutely smashing. I had previously designed the poster for the Chicago Zine fest which culminated into zine overload Saturday afternoon.
